Trade Body Membership – Is it worth it?

Trade body membership can be expensive, so at some point in your business career, you have probably considered whether you should be a member of your given your trade body – whether the investment is worth it?

Chilli Promotional Products has been a member of the BPMA (British Promotional Merchandise Association for about 6 years now – to us, it’s absolutely worth it.  Membership comes with responsibility and accountability. All members are vetted, and sign up to a strict code of conduct (which can be found here ) – it’s not a case of paying your money and getting your membership!   It’s worth checking, if you buy promotional merchandise elsewhere, that the company that you are buying your promotional products from is a BPMA member, which allows you to buy with confidence.  Buying from a BPMA member insures your supplier is fair, ethical, transparent, and works to the highest standards.

As members, we get access to lots of training too – so we are able to keep ahead of the game when it comes to promotional products – new print methods, technologies and new products, we’re there at the forefront, and by attending BPMA events we are always meeting the best suppliers in the industry to ensure we continue to supply our customers with the best products!

I guess it is the same with any type of membership, if I joined the Chamber of Commerce and never engaged with the networking or training events that they put on, I am not likely to say that my membership has given me any benefit.

Ultimately, there is only so much budget available in a business, so you should be reviewing regularly all of your expenditure – but particularly pay attention to your membership fees – are they giving you value for money? Are they generating business and income streams for you? Are they giving you the market edge in your industry? If not – perhaps you need to look at how you’re using the memberships yourself. Maybe you need to make time to make use of them and get the most out of them – but then again, maybe it’s not you – it might be that the group/organisation is not right for you at this stage.
